Protecting one of India’s most precious resource

Over the decades, Toyota has proactively put into place many systems and programmes to establish ourselves as a responsible, eco-conscious corporate citizen. These initiatives, which are implemented with all affiliates, including Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), have a deep focus on reducing environmental impact at each stage of the manufacturing process, and on the vision of sustainable manufacturing in harmony with the environment. One such initiative at TKM is its leadership in water conservation.

Conserving A Precious Resource

Reducing water starts with ensuring zero water waste. To reach this goal, green practices are embedded at all stages of the manufacturing process. Water efficiency is consistently monitored, and water leakage risks are checked regularly to prevent any unnecessage wastage. Any wastewater is also reused and recycled through the use of membrane bioreactor and reverse osmosis technologies, which are set up at TKM’s two manufacturing plants – this has allowed TKM to recycle up to 60% of water used in production. The water treated through these technologies is utilized throughout the plant, either for domestic use (such as gardening or afforestation) or industrial purposes (like car washing, and septic flushing).

Further water conservation structures have also been built into TKM’s plant premises. These include a state-of-the-art rainwater harvesting pond with a storage capacity of 25,000 cubic metres. Rainwater, surface run-off, and rooftop water is collected here, and a whopping 70,000 cubic metres of water is harvested each year from this pond alone. This water is then carefully processed, treated, and reused during the production process.

In addition, TKM proactively promotes efficient water use amongst employees, ensuring that the concept and practice of water conservation is well-grounded in all parts of the company.

Conserving A Precious Resource

Water is a precious resource in the subcontinent of India. With this in mind, these programmes, as a whole, have overall objectives of reducing consumption of fresh water during operation, and reaching a state of water neutrality. TKM now successfully runs its plants using only 100% recycled or harvested rainwater.

At Toyota, we have a relentless commitment towards eco-friendly, value-added business practices. We build quality cars with maximum fuel efficiency, while maintaining strict environmental standards and sustainable systems. As we work towards a long-term vision of a sustainable society in harmony with nature, we hope that our continuous efforts will ultimately help to better the lives of the people in local communities, and also improve upon the surrounding environment and climate.
